Executive Director of UNHABITAT Visits UPSC and Tsinghua University
Undersecretary-general of the UN and Executive Director of the UN-HABITAT Joan Clos visited the Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC) with other four officials from the UN-HABITAT on Jun. 30. This is the first time that Dr. Joan Clos officially visited China since he took office in October 2008. SHI Nan, Vice President and Secretary-general of the UPSC, introduced major facts and functions of the UPSC, as well as some potential cooperation with the UN-HABITAT. Dr. Joan Clos also raised some questions about China’s urban planning and invited the UPSC to organize activities in the Sixth World Urban Forum, which will be held in Naples of Italy in 2012. He also suggested that the UN-HABITAT could organize seminars in the Annual National Planning Conference of China and some activities for young planners jointly with the UPSC.
On the same day, Dr. Joan Clos also visited Tsinghua University and held a forum with the relevant responsible people in charge of School of Architecture. QIAN Yi, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Academic Committee of Tsinghua University, WU Liangyong, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ZHU Wenyi, head of the School of Architecture, BIAN Lanchun, secretary of the School of Architecture, etc., attended the forum. Mr. QIAN Yi read an address of welcome in behalf of the President of Tsinghua University. Mr. WU Liangyong introduced research progress on the science of human settlements made by the Center for Human Settlements. Dr. Joan Clos also introduced the work of the UN-HABITAT. Both sides discussed on the future academic cooperation in the field of human settlements between the UN-HABITAT and Tsinghua University. After the forum, Dr. Joan Clos and his colleagues also visited the exhibition of “New Progress in the Sciences of Human Settlements” held in the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University.
