The 47th ISOCARP World Congress Held in Wuhan
The 47th World Congress of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), organized by ISOCARP in collaboration with the Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC) and Wuhan Municipal Government, was held in Wuhan from Oct. 24 to Oct. 28, 2011. Mr. JIANG Weixin, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China, sent a congratulatory letter. Mr. WANG Shaojie, Member of CPPCC Standing Committee, Deputy Director of the Committee of Population, Resources and Environment, and Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of Democratic Progressive Party; Mr. ZHANG Tong, Vice Governor of Hubei Province; Mr. TANG Liangzhi, Mayor of Wuhan; and Mr. Orongo, James, Minister of Land of Kenya, gave their ebullient remarks respectively on the opening ceremony of the congress.
The theme of the 47th Congress was “Livable Cities: Urbanizing World, Meeting the Challenge.” Five parallel sessions were conducted as well, which included “Implementing Low-carbon Urban Environment,” “Constructing Sustainable Network Space,” “Transportation System,” “Legacy and Environment: Protection and Utilization amid Transformation,” and “Livable Environment of Region and Hinterland.” During the congress, the Youth Planner International Design Workshop themed by “Heart of Chinese High-speed Railway,” and the “Wuhan Planning Cup” College Student Planning and Design Competition, were also held. About 2,000 people, including professional planners from 48 countries and regions, as well as the representatives of planning administrative departments of main cities, planning and design institutions, colleges and universities in China, attended this great event. Mr. SHI Nan, Vice President and Secretary-general of UPSC, was elected as the Vice Chairman of ISOCARP.
The 48th World Congress of ISOCARP will be held in Perm, Russia in September 2012.
