Second International Symposium on Sciences of Human Settlements Held in Tsinghua University
The Second International Symposium on Sciences of Human Settlements was jointly hosted by Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Tsinghua University in the Main Building of Tsinghua University on Apr. 29, 2012.
Themed with “Human Settlements and Cultural Development,” the symposium invited well-known domestic and foreign scholars and experts in related fields to have high-end academic discussions, including LI Jinghai, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences; CHEN Gang, Deputy Mayor of Beijing Municipal Government; CHEN Jining, President of Tsinghua University; HU Heping, Secretary of Party Committee of Tsinghua University; Professor WU Liangyong, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering; ZHOU Ganzhi, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction; and other scholars and professors from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, Tongji University, Southeast University, etc. Madhav G. Deobhakta, Former Chairman of World Society for Ekistics (WSE), and Heng Chye Kiang, professor from National University of Singapore also attended the symposium.
Professor WU Liangyong gave an academic report themed with “Scientific Development and Human Settlements,” emphasizing the contents of urbanization strategies, urban-rural integration, expanded and cross-discipline research, and local experiments. He stated that the theoretical research and experimental exploration on the Sciences of Human Settlements should be further carried out, to find a path of scientific development with Chinese features.
The symposium congratulated Professor WU, on his winning of the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award. On behalf of the Presidium of Chinese Academy of Sciences, LI Jinghai, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences appreciated Professor WU, for his significant contribution to China’s science and education. XU Kuangdi, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Honorary President of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Joan Clos, Executive Director of the UN-Habitat and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, and V. Sgoutas, former President of International Union of Architects, also sent their written addresses for congratulation.
