State Council approves Lanzhou New District as the Fifth National New District
On Aug. 20, 2012, the State Council of China released No. (2012) 104 document titled Reply of the State Council on Approving the Establishment of Lanzhou New District, which approved the establishment of Lanzhou New District and the Guiding Opinions on Construction of Lanzhou New District in principle.
Located on the north of Lanzhou, Lanzhou New District is formed by six villages and towns, namely, Zhongchuan, Qinchuan, Shangchuan, Shuping of Yongdeng County, and Xicha and Shuifu of Gaolan County. Either the location advantages or the resources conditions of the areas are quite satisfying, so the development potential of the area is remarkable and the conditions for accelerated development are quite ready.
According to the document, the construction of Lanzhou New District should be regarded as an important measure for the development of West China, a new path to explore new industrialization, urbanization, and great-leap-forward development pattern of under-developed area. As a result, a high-level and rapid socio-economic development of Gansu Province will be realized. The document stresses that through the construction of Lanzhou New District, Lanzhou City should be built into an important economic growth pole in Northwest China, an important industrial base of the country, a key strategic platform for the opening-up to the west, and a demonstration zone of accepting the industrial transition from East and Central China, thus to play a more important role in driving the development of Gansu and its peripheral areas.
Now Lanzhou New District has become the fifth national new district, after Shanghai Pudong New District, Tianjin Binhai New District, Chongqing Liangjiang New District, and Zhejiang Zhoushan Islands New District, and also the first one at national level in Northwest China.
