Steering Committee for Teaching in Higher Education Institutions Established
On Nov. 1, 2018, the Steering Committee for Teaching in Higher Education Institutions (2018 – 2022) was officially established. It contains 2 general, 109 special, and 40 branch steering committees, which gather the most authoritative experts in the field of higher education. The new steering committee will become an elite group supporting the comprehensive development of higher level education, and shoulder the work in research, consultation, inspection, assessment, and service in the field of higher education.
The new steering committee contains 5,550 members, in which 111 are chief committee members, 710 are deputy chief members, and 3,611 are newly selected members, making up two thirds in the total number. Under the committee, the “Steering Committee for Teaching of the Discipline of Architecture” contains 1 chief committee member, 4 deputy chief members, 1 secretary-general, 14 committee members, and is consists of 3 sub-committees that are “the Steering Sub-committee for Teaching of Architecture,” “the Steering Sub-committee for Teaching of Landscape Architecture,” and “the Steering Sub-committee for Teaching of Urban and Rural Planning.”
At present, China has established a higher education system with the largest scope in the world. In 2017, there were 2,631 higher education institutions, with 37.79 million students and a gross enrollment rate of 45.7%. China is developing toward the direction of popularization of higher education, but also faces severe challenges, and vitalizing undergraduate education in a comprehensive way is regarded as the core task for the reform and development of higher education at a new era.
