China’s State Council Approves Regulations on Environmental Impact Assessment of Planning (Draft)
The Regulations on Environmental Impact Assessment of Planning (Draft) was recently reviewed and approved in principle during the standing meeting of the State Council of China, presided over by Premier WEN Jiabao. Based on the Law of Environmental Impact Assessment of People’s Republic of China, the Regulations requires that, when making land-use and regional plans, plans for river and seaside construction and development, as well as specific plans for the development of industry, agriculture, livestock, forestry, energy, hydropower, transportation, urban construction, tourism, and natural resources, assessments on the environmental impact of the project should be conducted in order to prevent pollution and to guarantee the sustainable development of the society. The standing meeting also decided that the Regulations should be released for implementation by the State Council after revision.
